Patrick Lanning – Is Education Still Worth It?

March 17, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Ever since the introduction of computers, the internet and digital life, many aspects of our daily lives have been either changed, or have been abandoned completely. One such aspect which is facing a great deal of debate right now, is that of education. The reason behind this is the firstly, education is not needed to become an internet sensation such as a blogger, a vlogger or even to create an online business, the second reason is that many believe that education does not properly prepare us for life.

I was speaking to family friend Patrick Lanning when I was back in Oregon recently about this subject, and in spite of the noise surrounding education, I still believe that it is worthwhile, and here is my reasoning why.

Job Prospects

Whilst the internet is of course a great place to create a business and find your own way of earning, it is not for everyone and if anything, education should be used to help people understand this world better. My general opinion is that education must change, rather than be abandoned as it is still necessary to gain access to the world of work. Perhaps you have dreams of being a president or a government official, a doctor or a lawyer, with these careers especially, a candidate who received their education on YouTube will be laughed out of the room. There are still jobs which require a proper education and so in this regard, it is absolutely worthwhile.

Accuracy

The danger of learning things online, even from a relatively reliable source, is that you can never truly be sure if what you are reading and learning about is accurate. Unfortunately, the internet is relatively unpoliced which leaves space for charlatans to do unscrupulous things, including posting false information. My belief is that universities, schools and other educational facilities, should 100% utilise the internet to better provide an education for its students, but no student should depend solely on what they read and see online when it comes to learning something new.

Social

Another reason why I believe that traditional education methods are the right way of doing things, is that education is not just about learning about topics. Education provides us with an environment where we can grow as people, make new friends and learn social skills which will be vital going forward. Cooping yourself up in your room, stay behind your laptop, is no way to form any kind of relationship, and it could do great damage to your social skills in the future.

Costs

The biggest issue that I do have with education, and it is one which I believe pushes more people straight into work or even away from education altogether, is the cost. The costs of a university education is extraordinary and it is up to the educational organisations to fix this, in order to keep people interested in a traditional education. Through a combination of traditional education and modern techniques, we can help to bring down the cost of eduction and make it accessible to everyone.

The MBA, Master of Business Administration, is one of the most prestigious degrees in the world. Arnon Dror, the VP of Finance at the US Channel Group, Xerox, holds not just an MBA in Finance but also an MA in Micro Economics. This makes him one of the most sough-after Senior Operations Executive in the world. He completed his education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. Since February, he has placed a stronger focus on the skills he obtained as part of his MBA in Finance.

Arnon Dorr on the MBA

Nowadays, anyone who wants to make it in the world of business should hold an MBA. Graduates like Arnon Dorr understand the complexities experienced by businesses from the bottom to the top. By holding this type of degree, people can take on positions in the top businesses in the world.

Economics are becoming increasingly global, and finance executives are expected to be focused and results oriented, which is what an MBA teaches them to do. People like Dror have prospects in any organization and they are in huge demand.

Obtaining an MBA takes around two years to complete. Many choose to complete a general MBA, but Dror chose to specialize and opt for finance in particular, as this is where his interests have always been. While he completed his MA in Micro Economics by going to school full time, his MBA was completed around his work as a Senior Operations Executive. Considering the high level of seniority of this role, being able to perform his duties while completing an MBA at the same time is a true testament to his skills and abilities.

More and more organizations like Xerox demand their financial senior executives hold an MBA. This is because their role is so much wider than solely accounting or bookkeeping, for instance. Dror himself is involve in studying and analyzing investment strategies, market economics, and how to raise more capital, which are hugely important strategies for businesses. It is no surprise, therefore, that someone with this type of degree has so many more prospects open to them. Indeed, this February alone Dror was offered positions in risk management, banking, and investment securities. He chose to remain with Xerox, however, where he tracks the various financial reports and uses his findings to drive strategic decisions that help the business develop and be ready to face upcoming challenges.

One issue of significant importance as well, is where someone obtained their education. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is respected all over the world for turning out some of the best graduates around. Completing his education here set Arnon Dror up for a highly successful career. He recommends the MBA degree to anyone who is interested in taking on positions of true seniority within the world of business. Xerox, meanwhile, is one of the biggest companies in the world and they count themselves lucky to have been able to attract and retain someone of Dror’s skills and knowledge.

Top Skills That a Novelist Requires

September 27, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

I regularly speak to people at careers fairs and the like and I am almost always overwhelmed by the amount of people who tell me that they have dreams of being a successful novelist such as Orlando Figes one day. I am always supportive of anyone who wants to follow their dreams but I understand how difficult it is to leave school and tell the world that this is what you want to do. The issue with a dream like becoming a novelist is that it does’t pay unless you are successful and success can be hard to find. With that being said, one should always pursue their dreams and if being a novelist is what you dream of, here are the skills which you will need to make it happen.

Creativity

The absolute key to anyone who has dreams of writing for a living is that they have a strong level of creativity in their mind and an active imagination. Even if you plan to write on largely fact-based events, there is a certain joie de vivre which you will need to possess so that you are able to create something which is entertaining and ensures that the audience wants to read what you have written.

Hard Work

A novel does not just come together overnight, it takes hours and hours of writing and re-writing in order to complete it. Even before you get started on your novel you will need to spend a great amount of time researching and planning how you will go about writing your story. In order spend this level of time on your book, you must have 100% dedication and commitment.

Judge of Character

It is the characters within novels that the general public react to and resonate with and you must have the ability to create characters within your stories that people can relate to. In order to be able to do this, you must be a great judge of character in the real world and be able to spot nuances and ticks in a person’s makeup. If you are able to do this then you will find that character creation is far easier and you can invent people that the general public will feel emotional towards as they flick through the pages.

Grasp of English

This should go without saying but you would be surprised just how many people claim to want to write novels one day, yet their grasp of grammar is very poor. We live in a world of spellcheck and autocorrect which covers over the cracks of any grammar problems which we may have, but writing a novel is different to writing a text message. In order to write a novel that flows well and looks great, you need to have a firm grasp on grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, flow and pace. Without these skills, it is pointless starting a novel and you would be better off spending this time on improving your level of English.
